The official currency of the country is the Dominican peso $RD, it is not easy to give a exchange rate since the fluctuation changes. The money bills which are in circulation are the 2000, 1000, 500, 100, 50, 20, 10 and since a short time there are 4 new coins 1, 5, 10, 25 pesos (see the photos below).
In the most touristic zones, the US dollar and the Euro is accepted, but it is better not to use it because the exchange rate applied by the retailers is very high and unfavorable for you. If you wish to change money it is better for you to find an Exchange Office or a Bank where you can see the exchange rate written, the exchange rates in the airports are always lower then in the exchange offices or banks. Also you can find an exchange market on the street, there the exchange rate is more advantageous for you, but watch out inform yourself with the approximate exchange rate so you don't get tricked.
Credit Cards are accepted all around the touristic zones, but it is better to get your money from an ATM machine, you can find them all around the country. The accepted credit cards are VISA, EUROCARD MASTERCARD, AMERICAN EXPRESS.
